VTrans Awards 89er South Commuter Expansion Grant

July 11, 2018

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) has awarded Stagecoach Transportation, a division of Tri-Valley Transit Inc., a three year Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant to expand the 89er South Commuter bus route serving residents along the I-89 corridor from Randolph south to employers in Lebanon, Hanover and White River Jct.

The expanded 89er South Commuter service will provide feeder routes for residents in Chelsea, Tunbridge, Rochester and Stockbridge. The expanded service will help regional commuters, residents needing access to Upper Valley medical services and student-age riders whose schools have been closed under Vermont’s school consolidation efforts.

“The expanded 89er South Commuter service allows Stagecoach to better serve the residents of four more towns,” Tri-Valley Transit Executive Director Jim Moulton said. “With gas prices rising above $3 a gallon, taking the bus saves every riders money. Some commuters may even be able to reduce the number of vehicles in the family, saving more than any government subsidy or tax cut can provide.”

Stagecoach will be holding public hearings regarding the expansion service at the Chelsea Town Office on Wednesday, August 1st at 6:00 PM and the Rochester Town Office on Tuesday, July 31st at 6:00 PM. The expanded 89er South Commuter service is expected to go into effect at the end of August 2018.
